ਮਿਲਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਅੰਤਰ-ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਖੇਡ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਯੋਗਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੇਕ ਸੋਨੇ ਦੇ ਤਮਗੇ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਤ-ਭੂਮੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਵਧਾਇਆ । 1956 ਦੇ ਓਲੰਪਿਕ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਨਿਧਤਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ 200 ਮੀਟਰ ਅਤੇ 400 ਮੀਟਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੌੜਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਕਾਇਮ ਕੀਤਾ । 1958 ਦੀਆਂ ਕਾਮਨਵੈਲਥ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ 400 ਮੀਟਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਯੋਗਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਤਮਗਾ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ । ਉਹ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਸਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਤਮਗਾ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ ।

ਮਿਲਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਟੋਕੀਓ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਦੌੜਾਕ ਅਬਦੁਲ ਖ਼ਾਲਿਕ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਾ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਤਮਗਾ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਨੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੌੜ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਵੰਡ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੌੜੀਆਂ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ । ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਲਾਲ ਨਹਿਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ । ਮਿਲਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਫਿਰ ਅਬਦੁਲ ਖਾਲਿਕ ਨੂੰ ਦੌੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਹੋਏ ।ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਮਿਲਖਾ ਤੂੰ ਦੌੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਉੱਡਿਆ ।” ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ “ਫਲਾਇੰਗ ਸਿੱਖ’ ਦਾ ਖਿਤਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਮਿਲਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਫਲਾਇੰਗ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੋਕਪ੍ਰਿਯ ਹੋਏ ।1959 ਵਿਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਸਫਲਤਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਪਦਮ ਦੇ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ | ਸੈਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਰਿਟਾਇਰ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਕ ਬਣੇ ।ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਤਮਗੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਸਰੋਤ ਹੈ ।

मिल्खा सिंह भारत की महान् हस्तियों/विभूतियों में एक हैं। वह एक प्रसिद्ध खिलाड़ी (धावक) हैं। वह फ्लाइंग सिख (Flying Sikh) के नाम से भी जाने जाते हैं। उनका जन्म अविभाजित भारत के पंजाब (अब पाकिस्तान में) के सिख राठौर राजपूत परिवार में हुआ। भारत का विभाजन तब हुआ जब वह अभी किशोर अवस्था में थे। उन्होंने अपने माता-पिता की हत्या होते देखी। उनके पिता के आखिरी शब्द थे, “भाग मिल्खा भाग” जिसका अर्थ है-“दौड़ो मिल्खा दौड़ो।” यह मिल्खा के लिए आखिरी संदेश था कि भागो और अपनी जान बचाओ।

‘मिल्खा का स्कूल उनके घर से 10 किलोमीटर दूर था। उन्हें यह दूरी तय करने के लिए हर रोज़ दौड़ने की आदत थी। उनकी इस आदत ने उन्हें एक अच्छा धावक बनने में सहायता की। विभाजन के बाद, वह अपनी बड़ी बहन के साथ भारत आ गए। बाद में उन्होंने सेना में भर्ती होने का प्रयत्न किया। 1951 में चौथे प्रयास में उनका चुनाव हुआ और वह धावक के रूप में शामिल कर लिये गए।
मिल्खा सिंह ने अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय खेल प्रतियोगिताओं में अनेक स्वर्ण पदक जीतकर अपनी मातृभूमि का गौरव बढ़ाया। 1956 के ओलंपिक खेलों में उन्होंने भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व किया। भारत की राष्ट्रीय खेलों में उन्होंने 200 मीटर और 400 मीटर की दौड़ों में राष्ट्रीय रिकार्ड स्थापित किए।
1958 की कॉमनवेल्थ खेलों में भी 400 मीटर की प्रतियोगिता में उन्होंने एक स्वर्ण पदक जीता। वह पहले भारतीय पुरुष खिलाड़ी थे जिन्होंने व्यक्तिगत स्वर्ण पदक जीता।

मिल्खा सिंह ने टोकियो में होने वाली एशियन खेलों में पाकिस्तानी धावक अब्दुल खालिक को हराकर भी स्वर्ण पदक जीता। उन्हें पाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति ने पाकिस्तान में होने वाली दौड़ में शामिल होने का निमंत्रण दिया। परन्तु विभाजन की कटु यादों के कारण वह नहीं जाना चाहते थे। अंत में पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरू ने उन्हें जाने के लिए राजी कर लिया। मिल्खा सिंह ने एक बार फिर अब्दुल खालिक को दौड़ में पछाड़ा। पाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति बहुत अधिक प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने कहा, “मिल्खा तुम दौड़े नहीं, वास्तव में तुम उड़े।” उन्होंने उन्हें ‘फ्लाइंग सिख’ की उपाधि दी। इस प्रकार मिल्खा सिंह फ्लाइंग सिख के नाम से लोकप्रिय हुए। 1959 में उन्हें खेलों में प्राप्त सफलताओं के लिए पदम श्री पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया। सेना से सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद, वह पंजाब में खेलों के निदेशक बने। उन्होंने अपने सभी पदक राष्ट्र के नाम कर दिए। उनका जीबन हमारे लिए प्रेरणा का महान् स्रोत है।
