2. Old John with white hair
Does laugh away care,
Sitting under the oak
Among the old folk.
They laugh at our play,
And soon they all say;
Such, such were the joys
When we all girls and boys.
In our youth time were seen
On the Echoing Green

Word-Notes : Old John-He does not refer to one particular person, but to old men in general.

Explanation. Here the poet says that Old John with grey hair laughs away his cares and worries. The old people keep sitting under the oak tree. They laugh at the play of boys and girls. They say that they were young once. These pleasures of playing on the Echoing Green were also enjoyed by them. According to them, the Echoing Green of the village was a symbol of a happy day.

3. Till the little ones, weary,
No more can be merry;
The sun does descend,
And our sports have an end.
Round the laps of their mothers
Many sisters and brothers,
Like birds in their nest,
Are ready for rest,
And sport no more seen
On the darkening Green.

Word-Notes : Weary-tired. Merry-happy. Does descend-come down or set.

Explanation. In these lines the poet says that children are tired and can no longer enjoy the play. The sun is going to set, so the sports of children come to an end. As birds gather round their nests to take rest, children gather near their mothers to fall asleep. And on the Echoing Green, no more sport is seen.

PSEB 12th Class English Solutions Poem 3 The Echoing Green

This poem is a little idyll (a happy piece of music in the peaceful countryside) of a village green on a warm afternoon in the spring. Young boys and girls have gathered for fun and frolic through their play. Some old men like John are sitting under the oak tree. Mothers of children also watch their young ones at play. The open green space of playground comes alive with the cheerful shouts of children and the songs of birds.

As the children play, the old people watch them. They are reminded of their own childhood. Old people forget the problems of their lives for the time being. The children go back home at sunset. Birds go to their nests to sleep for the night. The presence of children, birds, men and women on the ground shows the harmony between man and Nature.
