एक बार एक चर्मकार था। वह इतना गरीब हो गया कि उसके पास अपने परिवार को चलाने के लिए एक जोड़ी जूते बनाने के चमड़े के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं बचा। इसलिए उसने शाम को जूते बनाने के लिए बड़े ध्यान से चमड़ा काटा। वह बहुत दु:खी था। उसने सोने से पहले भगवान से प्रार्थना की और कहा कि वह उसकी मदद करें।

रात को उसने चमड़ा काटा और सुबह उसे सुन्दर जूते तैयार मिले। ऐसा बहुत रातों तक चलता रहा। शाम को जितना भी चमड़ा वह काटता था, सुबह तक खूबसूरती से (जूतों के रूप में) तैयार मिलता था। शीघ्र ही चर्मकार अमीर बन गया।

एक शाम आदमी ने अपनी पत्नी से कहा, “आओ रात को देखते हैं कि कौन हमारी मदद कर रहा है।” औरत को विचार पसंद आया। उसने एक मोमबत्ती जला दी। मोमबत्ती की ज्योति से कमरे में रोशनी हो गई। तब वे कमरे के एक कोने में परदे के पीछे छिप गए।

आधी रात को दो जादुई बौने नाचते हुए कमरे में आए। उन्होंने पुराने और फटे हुए कपड़े पहने हुए थे। वे चर्मकार की मेज़ पर बैठ गए। उन्हें कुशलपूर्वक टांके लगाते, सीते और हथौड़ा चलाते देखकर चर्मकार हैरान रह गया। जादुई बौनों ने काम समाप्त किया और भाग गए।

औरत ने कहा, “उन बौनों ने हमें अमीर बनाया है। हमें उनकी निःस्वार्थ सेवा के लिए उनका धन्यवाद करना चाहिए। मैं उनके लिए छोटी-छोटी कमीजें, कोट, वास्कट, पैंट और जुराबों की जोड़ी बनाऊंगी।” चर्मकार ने कहा, “ठीक है, मैं उनके लिए दो जोड़ी छोटे जूते बनाऊँगा।”
