ਪਾਲਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਤੂੰ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਕੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ?” ਬੀਰੋ ਨੇ ਉੱਤਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਉਹ ਪਾਖਾਨੇ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ।” ਪਾਲਾ ਨੇ ਹੈਰਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਕੀ !” ਬੀਰੋ ਅੱਗੋਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, “ਉਹ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਖੁਲ੍ਹੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਲ-ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਤੋਂ ਤੰਗ ਆ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਹਾਂ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਖ਼ਤਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ।”

मेंढ़क पाला और उसकी पत्नी बीरो एक तालाब के पास एक गांव में रहते थे। कुछ वर्ष पहले, तालाब के चारों ओर बहुत से पेड़ थे। यह रहने के लिए एक शीतल तथा शांत जगह थी। परंतु अब तालाब के चारों ओर बहुत अधिक भीड़-भाड़ के साथ ऊंची-ऊंची इमारतें बन गईं थीं। अब वह जगह शीतल तथा शांत नहीं रही थी।
पाला तालाब के चारों ओर तेज़ रफतार जिंदगी से खुश था परंतु बीरो तालाब के पास फैली गंदगी से तंग आ गई थी।
Pala said ……………………..going to face.”
पाला ने कहा, “प्रिय, इमारतों को देखो, कितनी ऊंची हैं! हमारा गांव तरक्की की ओर जा रहा है।” बीरो बड़बड़ाई, “तरक्की! क्यों, तुम्हें नहीं लगता कि हमारा स्वास्थ्य दाव पर लगा है ?” पाला ने कहा, “तुम क्या कह रही हो ?” बीरो ने कहा, “तुम्हें अपने चारों ओर देखना चाहिए। लोगों के पास पूरी सुविधाओं से युक्त सुंदर मकान हैं परंतु वे उनका सही उपयोग नहीं कर रहे।”
पाला ने कहा, “तुम कहना क्या चाहती हो ?” बीरो ने उत्तर दिया, “वे शौचालय का उपयोग नहीं कर रहे।” पाला ने हैरान होकर कहा, “क्या!” बीरो आगे बोली, “वे घर के समीप खुले में मलत्याग करते हैं। यहां दुर्गंध आती है। मैं इस दुर्गंध से ऊब (तंग आ) चुकी हूँ। उन्हें आने वाले खतरे से भी डर नहीं लगता।”
Pala said ………………………… deadly problem.
पाला ने कहा, “बीरो, किस प्रकार का खतरा ?” बीरो बोली, “बीमारियां! हम गांव के उन दो बच्चों को कैसे भूल सकते हैं जो दस्त और संक्रमण से मरे थे। कम से कम, मैं तो नहीं! मैं हैरान हूँ कि आदमी अच्छे स्वास्थ्य के तौर-तरीकों के प्रति कैसे इतना अनजान हो सकता है ?” वह बोलती गई, “मैंने निश्चय कर लिया है कि मैं इसे अब और अधिक सहन नहीं करूँगी।” पाला ने पूछा, “तुम क्या करोगी ?”
बीरो ने घोषणा की, “मैं लोगों में जागरूकता फैलाऊंगी कि शौचालय का उपयोग करो। मैं उन्हें बताऊंगी कि घर एवं उसके आसपास साफ़-सफ़ाई रखने के क्या लाभ हैं? क्या तुम मेरी सहायता करोगे ?” पाला बोला, “नि:संदेह ! अच्छे कार्य करने में न तो दूसरी सोच होती है और न ही किसी की अनुमति की आवश्यकता होती है।” दोनों बहुत ही खुश थे क्योंकि उन्हें एक जानलेवा समस्या का हल मिल गया था।
