Bar Graph द्वारा विभिन्न प्रकार के आंकड़ों को दंडों (Bars) की सहायता से दर्शाया जाता है। इससे आंकड़ों को समझना, उनका तुलनात्मक अध्ययन करना, उनकी बढ़ती या घटती प्रवृत्ति (Upwards & Downward trends) की जानकारी प्राप्त करना बहुत ही सरल हो जाता है।

How to Read a Bar Graph?

किसी Bar Graph को पढ़ना बहुत ही सरल है। इसके लिए निम्नलिखित विधि अपनाएं।
1. X-Axis अर्थात् क्षैतिज/लेटवीं (Horizontal) line आंकड़ों से जुड़ी items दर्शाती है।
2. Y-Axis अर्थात् लम्बवत् अथवा खड़ी (Vertical) line उनसे संबंधित आंकड़े बताती है। इस रेखा पर सुविधाजनक ढंग से आंकड़ों का विभाजन दिया होता है।
3. इसे पढ़ने के लिए item पर बने दण्ड के ऊपरी तल को सीधी रेखा द्वारा खड़ी लाइन से जोड़ें। वहां दिया गया आंकड़ा ही उसी item की value बताएगा।

Some Important Bar Graphs

1. Study the following Bar graphs and write a short paragraph on each about what it informs.

Paragraph – The graph shows the number of books sold during four months. It is from January to April. In January only two books were sold. In Feb, the number increased. It was three. In March too the equal number of books was sold. April recorded the maximum sale. In this month six books were sold. Thus, the total number of books sold during four months was twelve.

(ii) Total Number of Students in a School

Paragraph – The graph shows the number of students in a school in different years. Their number was maximum (600) in 2002. It was least in 2004 only after two years. It means something must have gone wrong with the school as 500 students left the school.

The school was also popular with the student in 1998 when its strength was 550. Then its strength went on falling for two years. On the whole, the school was a popular one till 2002.

(iii) Number of Corona (Covid-19) Patients in Punjab

Paragraph – The graph informs us about number of Corona (Covid-19) patients in Punjab. In April 2020, it spread very rapidly. Within a week, from April 5 to April 12 the number of Corona patients became six fold. The most alarming phase was April 5 to April 8 when the number jumped from 10 to 40. After that the spread lost its furry and only 20 more patients were added to it during the next four days. On April 12, the total number of patients was 60. The government is of the view that it was the result of the voilation of safety measures. For safey, people must keep distance and use masks. Above all, they should stay at home.

Paragraph – Our government buys wheat from the farmers every year. It is called Buffer stock. It is used in crisis. It is increasing year by year. In 1998 it was only 15 thousand tonnes. It jumped to 25 thousand tonnes next year. During 2002 purchase of wheat was maximum. It also shows the increase in wheat production. The production in 2000 reduced. And, so was the purchase. The next year also saw the same trend of production and purchase.

(a) This bar graph tells us the number of shirts sold in a ready-made shop from Monday to Saturday.

(c) On Tuesday, the number of shirts sold was the minimum. It was only ten.
(d) On Thursday thirty-five shirts were sold.
The graph also shows the sale went in increasing after Wednesday.

Now write answers in form of a paragraph.

ਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਇਕ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਭਰਿਆ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਉਣ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੇ ਆਰੰਭ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ “ਸਾਵਿਆ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ’ ਵੀ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਬਰਸਾਤ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਸ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਵੇ ਰੰਗ ਦਾ ਵੇਸ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਬੜੀਆਂ ਰੀਝਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜੇਠ-ਹਾੜ੍ਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਧੁੱਪਾਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੜਦੀ-ਬਲਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਫੁਹਾਰਾਂ ਠੰਢਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਹਰੀ-ਭਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਤੀਆਂ ਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਹੈ।

ਤੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁੱਝ ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਿਆਹੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਰਾ ਸਹੁਰਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੀਆਂ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿਛੜੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਫਿਰ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਚਪਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਤਾਜਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਧੀ ਪੇਕੇ ਨਾ ਆ ਸਕੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਧਾਰਾ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਗੁੜ, ਗੁਲਗੁਲੇ ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਾਰ-ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਥਾਂ ਹੈ । ਤੀਜ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦੂਜ ਨੂੰ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਲਾਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਬਾਂਹਵਾਂ ਭਰ-ਭਰ ਕੇ ਚੂੜੀਆਂ ਚੜਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਚਮਕਾ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ-ਨਵੇਂ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾ ਕੇ, ਸੋਹਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਗੰਦਾ ਕੇ, ਸੱਗੀ ਫੁੱਲ, ਹਾਰ-ਹਮੇਲਾ, ਝੁਮਕੇ, ਛਾਪਾਂ-ਛੱਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜੇਬਾਂ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਇਕੱਠੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੀਆਂ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਨਿਕਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਖੂਬ ਅਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ।

ਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਧੇ ਦਾ ਖੂਬ ਰੰਗ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਇਕ-ਦੂਜੇ ਤੋਂ ਵਧ-ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਪਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਬੋਲੀ ਟੁੱਟਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ । ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਸਮਾਏ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਨੱਚਦੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਮੀਂਹ ਤੇ ਛਰਾਟਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ । ਉਹ ਗਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਕਣੀ ਦਾ ਮੀਂਹ ਵਰਸੇਂਦਾ, ਠੰਢੀਆਂ ਪੈਣ ਫੁਹਾਰਾਂ । ਨੱਚ ਲੈ ਮੋਰਨੀਏ, | ਪੰਜ ਪਤਾਸੇ ਵਾਰਾਂ ।

ਔਖੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਰਥ :

ਖੇਲ਼-ਖੇਡ । ਕੱਕਰ, ਕੋਰਾ-ਠੰਢ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਵਾ ਦੀ ਨਮੀ ਦਾ ਘਾਹ ਤੇ ਪੌਦਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜੰਮ ਜਾਣਾ । ਭੋਰਾ-ਭੋਰਾ-ਥੋੜੀ-ਥੋੜੀ । ਰੁਮਕਦੀ-ਹੌਲੀ-ਹੌਲੀ ਚਲਦੀ । ਅੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ-ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ । ਲੂਹੀ-ਸਾੜੀ । ਭੱਦੀ-ਭੱਦੀ-ਘੁੰਮਦੀ-ਘੁੰਮਦੀ ।

ਕਾਵਿ-ਟੋਟੇ ਦੇ ਸਰਲ ਅਰਥ

(ੳ) ਇੱਕ ਰੁੱਤ ਆਏ ਇੱਕ ਰੁੱਤ ਜਾਏ,
ਖੇਲ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੌਣ ਰਚਾਏ ॥
ਪੈਂਦੀ ਰਹੇ ਕਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਸਰਦੀ,
ਠੰਢ ਚ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਠੁਰ-ਠੁਰ ਕਰਦੀ ।
ਉੱਚੇ ਪਰਬਤ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਚੋਟੀ,
ਚਿੱਟੀ ਬਰਫ਼ ਨਾਲ ਢਕ ਜਾਏ ।

ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ 1.
ਉਪਰੋਕਤ ਕਾਵਿ-ਟੋਟੇ ਦੇ ਸਰਲ ਅਰਥ ਕਰੋ ।
ਉੱਤਰ :
ਕਵੀ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਰੁੱਤ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਰੁੱਤ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਰੁੱਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਦਲਣ ਦਾ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਜਾਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਖੇਡ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਰਚਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ? ਜਦੋਂ ਕਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਸਰਦੀ ਪੈਣ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਠੰਢ ਵਿਚ ਠੁਰ-ਠੁਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।ਠੰਢ ਉਤਰਦੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ । ਇਸ ਰੁੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਇਕ ਚੋਟੀ ਚਿੱਟੀ ਬਰਫ਼ ਨਾਲ ਢੱਕੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।

ਸਰਦੀ ਦੀ ਰੁੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਇੰਨੀ ਠੰਢ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਮੀ ਦੇ ਕਣ ਜੰਮ ਕੇ ਕੱਕਰ ਤੇ ਕੌਰੇ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਵਦੇ ਹਨ । ਫਿਰ ਹੌਲੀ-ਹੌਲੀ ਰੁੱਤ ਬਦਲਦੀ ਹੈ । ਪਤਝੜ ਦੀ ਰੁੱਤ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਉਤਲਾ ਹਰ ਪੱਤਾ ਸੁੱਕ-ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਗੁੰਡ-ਮੁੰਡ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।

(ੲ) ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਰੁੱਤ ਬਸੰਤੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ,
ਬਾਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜਾਉਂਦੀ ।
ਮਿੱਠੀ-ਮਿੱਠੀ ਹਵਾ ਰੁਮਕਦੀ,
ਮਹਿਕ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਜਾਏ ।

Punctuation means putting full stops, commas, question marks etc. into a piece of writing. Punctuation helps to clarify the meaning of the sentence or passage.
लिखते समय उचित विराम चिन्हों, अर्थात् full stops (.), commas (,), question marks (?) आदि का प्रयोग करना Punctuation कहलाता है। ये चिन्ह वाक्य अथवा लेख के अर्थ को स्पष्ट करने में सहायता करते हैं।

The important Marks of Punctuation are-

3. The pronoun ‘P is always written in the capital form.
4. All Proper Nouns begin with a capital letter.
